Growing plants in pots began in Egypt there are about four thousand years,
mainly for practical reasons, utility and mobility. The Greeks, Babylonians,
Persians and Indians copied the technique. The Chinese were the first to grow
trees in pots for aesthetic purposes, in the era of the Han Dynasty (-206 to
220). At that time there was no talk of bonsai as a hobby, but Penjing (pénjǐng 盆景)
(representation of a landscape in a cup). Shortly after the Qin Dynasty (220-581) appeared the
penzai 盆栽 (single tree in a cup). Today, in China , the tradition of Pengjing continues,
with more ardor than bonsai.
For proof of the existence of this art
at that time, in 1971, archaeologists discovered the tomb of Prince Zhang Huai,
who died in 705 during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), a mural painted on the walls
of his tomb . She is wearing two valets, one a miniature landscape, and the
other a lotus-shaped vessel containing a tree with green leaves and red
berries.
