A private collection is a private collection of works, usually an art collection. If seen in a museum next to a work or describe a work, it means that piece of art in Amuseum is not actually owned by the museum, but was loaned by an independent source, whether for long-term or temporary exhibitions.

This source is usually an art collector, although it could be a school, church organization, a bank or other company, or any form of institution.

Book collectors, even if they collect for aesthetic reasons (finebookbindings or illuminated manuscripts, for example), are called bibliophiles, and their collections are considered libraries.

Art collection was common among the rich in the ancient world in Europe and East Asia and the Middle Ages, but has developed into its modern form during the Renaissance and continues to this day.

The royal collections of most countries were the source of the largest private collections but are now mainly in public ownership.

However, the question BritishRoyal remain in the custody of the Crown, if distinguished from the private property of the British royal family.
The cabinet of curiosities was a major mixed form of the collection, including art and what we now call the natural history or scientific collections.

They were trained by royalty, but also by smaller merchants and academics.
Tastes and habits of collectors have played a very important role in determining what art was produced, providing demand that artists supply.

Many types of objects, such asmedals, prints, small plates, gems and modern engraved bronze statuettes were essentially made for the collector market.

By the 18th century all households were expected to do well to contain a selection of objects, porcelain paintings, which could be part of an art collection and the collections of those who would normally qualify for the term to be considerably larger, and some were huge. More collectors tend to specialize in one or two types of work, even though some, like George Salting (1835-1909), was still a great scope for their collections.

Besides the antiques, which were considered perhaps the highest collection of Renaissance form until relatively recently, as well as books, paintings and prints from the late 15th century until that collectors of the 18th century tended to collect enough new works from Europe.

The extension of the serious collection of art from all periods and places was essentially a development of the 19th century, or at least from the time of the Enlightenment.

Trecento paintings were not appreciated until about the 1830s, and the Chinese ritual bronzes and jades until perhaps the 1920s.

Collection of African art was rare until after the Second World War.

In recognition of its importance in influencing the production of the new art and the preservation of the ancient art, collecting art has been an area of considerable academic research in recent decades, having previously been somewhat neglected .
